Terms of use
Last updated 5 September 2026. These terms cover HuntFix for iPhone, published from New Zealand ("I", "me"), and this website.
By using HuntFix you agree to what is set out below. If you do not agree, delete the app.
What HuntFix is
HuntFix is a navigation aid. It takes four things — where your phone is, which way it is pointed, the elevation angle it is held at, and a range you type in yourself — and calculates an estimated position for the target. It then guides you back to that position.
Every estimate it produces carries an uncertainty, and the app shows you that uncertainty rather than a false pinpoint. A value it does not know is shown as a dash, never as a zero.
What HuntFix is not
It is not a survey instrument, and it is not a substitute for your own judgement, a map, a compass, or knowing the country you are in.
The accuracy of any target depends on things outside the app's control:
- the accuracy of your GPS fix, which varies with terrain, canopy and sky view;
- the accuracy of your phone's compass, which can be thrown by iron, vehicles, batteries, magnets and some phone cases, and which needs calibrating;
- how steadily you were holding the phone at the moment you locked the bearing;
- whether the range you typed is the one your rangefinder actually gave you;
- whether that range is a line-of-sight range or one your rangefinder has already corrected for angle.
The app warns you about several of these and widens its uncertainty when the sensors are poor. It cannot detect all of them, and it cannot detect a mistyped number.
Safety and the law
You are responsible for your own safety and for everyone else's.
- Identify your target beyond all doubt before you shoot. No app has any part in that decision, and HuntFix does not begin until after it.
- Hunt only where you have the legal right to be, with the permits and permissions your jurisdiction requires.
- Do not stare at a phone screen while moving through steep, bluffy or otherwise dangerous country. A distance and a bearing are not a route, and the app deliberately does not plan one.
- Carry a map, a compass and a means of calling for help. A phone with a flat battery navigates nothing.
- Follow the firearms law and the hunting regulations that apply where you are.
Liability
HuntFix is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or accuracy.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, I am not liable for any loss, injury, damage or cost arising from your use of, or inability to use, HuntFix — including an animal you do not recover, a walk you did not need to make, time lost, or a decision you made on the strength of something the app displayed.
Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or Fair Trading Act 1986, or under equivalent consumer legislation where you live, to the extent those rights cannot lawfully be excluded.
Buying HuntFix
HuntFix includes two free recoveries so you can see whether it works for you before you pay anything. After that, marking a new target requires a one-off in-app purchase that unlocks the app for good on your Apple Account.
- Payment is handled entirely by Apple. I do not see or store your payment details. Purchases, restores, refunds and offer-code redemptions all go through the App Store and are subject to Apple's own terms.
- A target you have already marked is never held to ransom. Navigating to a target that already exists works whether or not you have bought the app, and keeps working.
- Nothing is deleted or hidden if you do not buy. Your saved targets, photographs, breadcrumb trails, accuracy breakdown and exports stay available.
- Refunds are Apple's to give, through the App Store's own process. I cannot issue one.
What the one-off purchase does and does not include
The purchase buys HuntFix's marking and recovery tool, and improvements to it as it grows. It is a one-off payment, not a subscription, and it is not withdrawn from you later.
It is not a promise that every future HuntFix service is included. Some things cost money to keep running — premium topographic maps, terrain elevation data, cloud backup, or sharing targets with a hunting party. If those are ever built, they may be offered separately, as their own purchase or subscription.
Anything you have already bought is never taken away from you. If a separately-sold service is ever offered and you decide not to take it, or take it and later stop, you keep everything the one-off purchase gave you.
Prices may change for new buyers. A change never affects what you already own.
Your content
Your targets, photographs, notes and trails are yours. They live on your phone; I have no copy of them and no way to get one. See the privacy policy.
Because everything is local, deleting the app deletes your targets unless they are in a device backup. If a target matters, export it as GPX and keep it somewhere else.
Changes
I may update these terms as the app changes. The date at the top says when they last changed. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of New Zealand, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction — without affecting any consumer right you have where you live that cannot be contracted out of.
