NZ firearms licence · theory test practice
I’m Scott, a Kiwi hunter and former Mountain Safety Council firearms safety instructor. I built this to help my daughter get ready for her test. I hope it helps you too.
FAL Ready is a firearms licence test prep app: independent practice for the New Zealand firearms licence theory test. 30 questions in 30 minutes, like the real test; the seven rules until you can say them; written for the Arms Act 2026, with the source shown on every answer. FSE’s free e-learning modules teach you. FAL Ready makes it stick.
iPhone only, iOS 18 or later. No account. Works with no signal.
Coming soon to the App Store — not downloadable yet. When it is: free to try, and NZ$9.99 once unlocks everything. No subscription, no ads.
Real screens from the app, in light or dark to match this page. Switch the page’s theme to see the other.
The firearms safety course and FSE’s free e-learning are where you learn this. FAL Ready does not try to replace them: its recaps are short on purpose, and every one sends you back to FSE’s own module. What it adds is the practice — the same questions asked until the answers are yours.
Pick 5, 7 or 10 and go, with no account and nothing to set up. After every answer: whether it was right, in words as well as a tick, the explanation, and where it comes from. It works with no signal, from the first time you open it.
Drills on each rule and on all seven. A warm-up that puts them in order. Then the recital: all seven, typed or spoken with your keyboard’s microphone, the same words in the same order. Getting the recital right is what earns Seven Rules: mastered.
A few short cards per topic, one at a time like flashcards: the thing to remember first, then the points that go with it. Each topic ends with Learn it properly, a link to FSE’s own free module where there is one, opened in Safari inside the app, and a drill to see if it stuck.
30 questions in 30 minutes, drawn across every topic with at least one on each rule. No feedback until the end; flag a question and come back to it. Then your score, your time, a breakdown by topic, the Seven Rules result on its own, and every answer reviewed with its explanation and source.
10, 20, or until mastered. A question you get wrong comes back a few questions later, and only clears when you have answered it right twice in a row.
Everything you got wrong in the last 30 days, in one drill, until it sticks.
You will read a lot of confident numbers about this. Here is what is actually known, in the exact words the app uses on every mock.
FSE doesn't publish the theory test pass mark. In the tests Scott supervised under the old system, the pass was 28 out of 30, and any Seven Rules question wrong failed you. We train you to that standard: 28/30 or better, with every Seven Rules question right.
A study aid that is wrong is worse than none, so nothing in FAL Ready is stated without somewhere you can check it.
A good part of FAL Ready is free for good. One purchase unlocks the rest, for as long as you have the app.
One purchase, through the App Store. No subscription, no ads, nothing to cancel. Family Sharing is on, so one unlock covers your family group.
The price in the app comes from the App Store, so it is the one you will be charged. Restore purchase is in Settings. Not happy? Request a refund through Apple, and tell us why: [email protected]. Full terms in the terms of use.
Schools, NZDA branches and FSE-approved clubs can ask about a 50% discount for their learners at [email protected].
No account and nothing sent to me. Your progress stays on your iPhone and, unless you switch it off, in your own private iCloud, so a new phone does not mean starting again.

FAL Ready is an independent study aid made in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand (FSE), New Zealand Police, the Mountain Safety Council or any government agency. The Firearms Safety Code and the Arms Act 2026 are the authoritative sources. Check them, especially for storage and transport rules, which are being updated for the new Act. Passing our mock tests does not guarantee you will pass the official test or be granted a licence.
Coming soon to the App Store, in New Zealand. FAL Ready cannot be downloaded yet, and there is no store link on this page until it can. When it is on the store, this page will say so.
It is an iPhone app, and only an iPhone app: there is no Android version and no web version.
Two pages for anyone working towards a first licence, written from the same checked material as the app, with the official source on every step.
Each rule in a few lines: what it means at the range, on the farm and in the hills, and where the Firearms Safety Code says it.
Who can apply, referees, applying and paying, booking the course, the theory test, storage and FSE’s checks, in order.
