Terms of use
Last updated 14 September 2026. These terms cover HuntFix Journal for iPhone, published from New Zealand ("I", "me"), and the pages under huntfix.app/journal.
HuntFix Journal is a separate app from HuntFix, with its own price and its own privacy policy. Owning one gives you no rights in the other.
By using HuntFix Journal you agree to what is set out below. If you do not agree, delete the app.
What HuntFix Journal is
A logbook. You record the outings you go on, what you took, what you saw, where and when. The app works out the daylight and the moon from the time and the place, fetches the day's weather if there is signal, and adds the outings up for you afterwards.
Everything it shows you comes from what you logged. A rate is your own count over your own hours over your own outings, and all three numbers are shown together so you can judge what the figure is worth.
What HuntFix Journal is not
It is not advice, and it does not predict anything.
- It does not tell you where to hunt or when to go, and it is built so that it cannot. It will not say "best", it will not rank a spot as productive, and it will not put a trend line through your season.
- A figure standing on fewer than three outings is greyed and labelled too few to compare, because that is what it is.
- It shows you the past. There is nothing in it that describes the future.
- It contains no legal information whatsoever. No seasons, no bag limits, no licence or permit requirements, no regional rules. This is deliberate: those things differ by place, change without notice, and an app being wrong about one of them would be worse than useless. The optional licence note on an entry is a free-text field for your own records and is never checked against anything.
Knowing the law where you hunt or fish, and holding the licences and permissions it requires, is entirely yours.
The AI features
The Ask tab answers questions about your own record. It can do that on your iPhone using Apple's on-device model, or — if you subscribe and choose it — using Anthropic's Claude.
- A language model can be wrong. Both providers are instructed not to give advice, not to predict, and not to state a figure that did not come from your record, and the app checks every answer against those rules before showing it. Neither the instructions nor the check make an answer true. Read what it says as a summary of your own record, and check anything that matters against the record itself.
- The Claude option comes with the app — in the free week and with the subscription. There is no key to supply and nothing extra to pay. Requests go through a relay of mine to Anthropic, and there is a limit of five Claude questions a week (five in any seven days with the subscription, five in all in the free week) so that the price can stay where it is. The limit, the models offered and Claude itself may change, and if Anthropic is unavailable the Ask tab says so and Apple's on-device model still works. What is sent, and what is never sent, is set out in the privacy policy.
- Availability of the on-device model depends on your iPhone and on Apple. It is not something I can promise.
Safety and the law
- Hunt and fish only where you have the legal right to be, with the permits and permissions your jurisdiction requires, and within whatever seasons and limits apply. The app tells you none of this.
- Identify your target beyond all doubt before you shoot. Nothing in this app has any part in that decision.
- Do not stare at a phone screen while moving through steep or dangerous country.
- Carry a map, a compass and a means of calling for help.
- Follow the firearms law that applies where you are.
Liability
HuntFix Journal is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or accuracy.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, I am not liable for any loss, injury, damage or cost arising from your use of, or inability to use, HuntFix Journal — including a record you lose, an outing that produced nothing, a figure you read one way when it meant another, or anything an AI answer said.
Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or Fair Trading Act 1986, or under equivalent consumer legislation where you live, to the extent those rights cannot lawfully be excluded.
The subscription
HuntFix Journal is free for your first 7 days, then NZ$11.99 per year, auto-renewing. Nothing is asked of you for the first week — no subscription, no sign-up, nothing to cancel. These are the terms of both.
| Free for the first 7 days | From the day you first open the app. Everything works. Nothing to sign up for or cancel |
| Price after that | NZ$11.99 per year, or the equivalent in your own currency as the App Store sets it |
| Period | One year, renewing automatically |
| What it unlocks | The whole app: starting outings, adding entries, the Map, all of Insights, and Ask |
| What never needs it | Reading the record you have kept, export (JSON, CSV, GPX), the iCloud backup, and finishing an outing that is already running |
| Managed by | Apple, through the App Store |
- The free week starts when you first open the app, not when you subscribe. It is not an App Store trial: the app simply does not ask for seven days, and says so on its first screen. There is no introductory offer on the subscription, so subscribing is paid from the day it starts.
- Payment is taken by Apple when you subscribe, and each year after that, from the Apple Account you subscribed with — unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends.
- Cancel in the App Store, not here: iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or the App Store app → your account → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the subscription runs to the end of the period you have paid for.
- Refunds are Apple's to give, through reportaproblem.apple.com. I cannot issue one.
- Restore Purchases is on the subscription screen, for a new phone or a reinstall. Sign in to the Apple Account you subscribed with.
- Prices may change for new subscribers, and Apple will tell you before any change affects a renewal of yours.
The price shown inside the app comes from the App Store in your own currency, so it is the one you will actually be charged. Where the app cannot yet read a price it shows a dash rather than a guess.
What is free, and stays free
Your record is yours whatever you have or have not paid. After the free week, without a subscription, the app still lets you:
- read every outing, entry, photograph, spot and companion you have logged;
- export all of it — JSON, CSV and GPX — at any time;
- keep the iCloud backup running to your own Apple Account;
- finish an outing that was already running when the free week or the subscription ended, entries included.
If the free week or the subscription ends
An outing that is already running is never cut off. You keep logging it and you finish it as normal. The paywall appears only before a new outing — never inside a live one, never on the entry form, never at Finish.
After that, until you subscribe again, starting a new outing, adding entries, the Map, Insights and Ask are unavailable. Nothing else changes. No record is hidden, locked, degraded or deleted; every outing, entry and photograph stays exactly where it was and stays fully readable; export keeps working, in all three formats, forever; and the iCloud backup keeps running. Subscribe again and the whole app comes back with your whole record already in it.
Your content
Your outings, entries, photographs, spots, companions and notes are yours. They live on your phone and in your own iCloud; I have no copy and no way to get one. See the privacy policy.
Deleting the app removes the record from the phone. If the iCloud backup was on, the copy in your Apple Account remains until you remove it. Export a backup file before you delete anything you care about.
Changes
I may update these terms as the app changes. The date at the top says when they last changed. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of New Zealand, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction — without affecting any consumer right you have where you live that cannot be contracted out of.
